Victims Of House Fire Rely On Help From Neighbors, Strangers

Two weeks after a fire destroyed their Cherokee County home, a family is relying on the kindness of others to get through the holidays.  The rural home east of Troup was destroyed by a fast moving fire on December 13th. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

It started in the bedroom, and a smoke detector alerted mother Tonya Alatalo late that evening.  By the time firefighters arrived, the home of Tonya and Walter Wheeler could not be saved.

The family was not insured.

They are thankful for the help of others, and that they all made it out alive.

"The thing that 'killed' me the most was my daughter just saying 'Home, home,' and there was no place to go," says Wheeler.

A nearby church has set up a fund to help the family. It's called the Walter Wheeler Family Relief Fund. You can help them by making donations at any Austin Bank location.
