Marshall Homeowner Lives In Original Home Of "Great Debaters" Professor

For Mary Smith, just living in her house is a historic symbol that she didn't even know about until a friend, who happens to be a historian, told her that she lived in the home of "Great Debaters" professor, Melvin B. Tolson.

"I was just overwhelmed because I could not believe this and after she told me the historic facts about it that's when I was just real excited."

Professor Tolson and his family lived in the home at 1108 University Avenue in the 1930's, and it was here where Wiley College debaters practiced for hours.

"Since this is the largest room in the house, this is probably where the debates had taken place. The younger Melvin Tolson was talking about the debates early one morning and he was on his back listening to the debate," said Smith.

Mary saud she doesn't plan on moving anytime soon and embraces the fact that her home has a small place in history.

"I think it's very important to maintain the history. I do plan over the next couple of years to have a tour so this house will not be forgotten."

Not forgotten and still standing as one of the historical landmarks the town of Marshall has to offer.
