Sawyer Admits Mistake

A Smith County Commissioner says he made a mistake, but did not break the law.

During the Commissioner's Court meeting Monday morning, Frank Sawyer told the audience he had not intended to violate the Open Meeting's Act when scheduling discussions with a jail design firm. Sawyer says he talked to the company about the problems with the Smith County Jail and wanted to other commissioners to be able to hear the same information.

"I learned a lesson. I got distracted with going after with trying to do the best I could with the research and just didn't pay enough attention to the civil law involved. I made a mistake, but we caught it in time and we didn't hurt anything."

The Smith County District Attorney's Office says Sawyer did not break any laws during his discussions with the jail design firm.
