Journalism Schools Back UT-Tyler Newspaper Advisor

UT-Tyler Journalism advisor Vanessa Curry now has an eight-state council--made up of journalism schools, in her corner. The council released a statement in Curry's favor...saying she lost her contract as advisor of UT-Tyler's newspaper, "The Patriot," because she taught students freedom of the press.

Curry came under fire in earlier this month when administrators criticized her students' "aggressive" reporting practices. UT-Tyler President Rodney Mabry said it's a normal, accepted business practice at UT-Tyler not to give reasons for such decisions in order to protect all parties.

He added that the administration has never censored the paper and will never do so.
