Police Begin Operation Blue Santa

Some East Texas families are getting a little holiday cheer and generosity from an unusual source, as Longview police begin Operation Blue Santa.  After a year of fundraiser's and collecting toy donations, Longview police were ready for Operation Blue Santa, which benefits needy children during the holidays.

"We're coming to houses now and the kids don't know what to expect," said Longview Police Lieutenant Ron Buckner.  "We drive up and get out with the Santa Claus bearing gifts and you see the kids with their eyes and their smiles."

"I greatly appreciate it because during this time of need there are families that need this type of help, and I really deeply do appreciate the police," said gift recipient Angela Bridges.  Their goal, police say is to help economically disadvantaged families.  This year, more than 130 kids will receive toys and bikes through the program, gifts the children would not have had otherwise.

"You can't put it into words there expression on their faces," said one police officer.  "It just touches your heart to see that you are making a difference."  For some, the sight of police bearing gifts was something they weren't used to.

"Citizens are sometimes skeptical of us, and we want to come into your lives and tell you we do care about you and your important and that's what this is about," said Buckner.

Operation Blue Santa will continue until Friday.
