YWAM Of Tyler Responds To YWAM Denver Shootings

Denver residents are on alert as a gunman remains at large in Arvada, Colorado.  At YWAM of Tyler, flags fly at half-staff in remembrance of the young lives lost.

"We actually prayed immediately for them and for the families there," said Rick Allegretto, Assistant Director with YWAM of Tyler.  Allegretto said several students knew the Denver victims from missionary training.

"Some of the young people and their families that live in the area are certainly very shocked and devastated by what happened," said Allegretto.  Allegretto said they've been on the phone with their sister campus in Denver Sunday, offering support and prayers.

"We hope to be in continued communication with them and perhaps even reach out to them in some capacity," said Allegretto.  "That would bring some comfort, just letting them know we're thinking and praying for them."  A recent wave of deadly shootings in some of the most unlikely public places, a Nebraska mall, now Colorado religious facilities has YWAM of Tyler on heightened security.  Still, they say it won't change their form of ministry.

"The nature of our ministry is to reach out to people, and we don't want to close our doors, so that we can't do that," said Allegretto.  An open-door policy that even extends to the gunman who killed two of their own.

"Our heart goes out to all of the victims of something like this, but it also goes out to the young man who finds himself in this situation to do this," said Allegretto.  "We don't have ill feelings towards him, we just don't understand why it happened, and we hope that he first is apprehended and then gets the help he needs."
