Upshur County Sheriff's Deputy Charged With Indecency

An East Texas sheriff's deputy is arrested and charged with indecency with a child.

Richard Bridgewater, 29 is a former jailer and patrol officer with the Upshur County Sheriff's Office. He is charged with indecency with an 11 year old girl.   Authorities said the girl recalled at least 20 incidents of being victimized by Bridgewater. According to a Texas Rangers investigation, Bridgewater admitted to the incidents. He was fired from the department after his arrest.

"We are hired, elected or appointed to go out and enforce the law ... protect the citizens of the community that we're placed to serve. When we have one of our people step forward and commit an offense like this, it hurts law enforcement as a whole," said Upshur County Sheriff Anthony Betterton.

"It has a lasting effect on children for the rest of their lives. It never ends for the child. So that is one of the most difficult parts of these types of crimes against children," said Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd.

Because Bridgewater was a law enforcement officer in Upshur County, he is being held in the Titus County jail for his own safety.
