ETMC wins two statewide awards
ETMC received two statewide honors at the annual emergency medical services awards banquet. Dr. William Moore won the EMS Medical Director Award and ETMC Tyler won the Designated Trauma Facility Award from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The awards were presented Tuesday in Houston during their annual awards luncheon.
According to the Texas DSHS, the Trauma Center Award honors a designated trauma facility in Texas which has demonstrated leadership and high standards in implementing injury prevention programs and providing trauma patient care.
ETMC Tyler is a Level I trauma service at a community-based, non-teaching hospital, which is a rarity. The hospital serves East Texas, and is the only Level I hospital between Dallas and Shreveport. According to the nomination letter, " The ETMC Tyler trauma service is headed by Dr. Scott Norwood, who has been the driving force in making this trauma center a shining example of professionalism and service to all critically injured trauma patients."
ETMC Tyler became the first and only Level I trauma center in East Texas in 1998. In Texas there are a total of 13 Level I trauma centers in the state. There are a total of 245 trauma facilities with various trauma designations.
Dr. Moore has been with ETMC since 1989 as the medical director of EMS and as an emergency room staff physician. He is the chairman of the hospital preparedness committee for the regional advisory council for trauma. This is the second time he has received the award from DSHS out of over 600 EMS medical directors in the state.
