Crash Involves Gilmer School Bus

Some anxious moments for frightened Upshur County parents this morning after a school bus loaded with students crashes into a car. It happened just after 7:00 a.m. in the Glenwood community at the intersection of FM 726 and County Road 3358.

"There were a lot of ems people, the bus was pulled in the corner a car was pulled in front of the bus" said Gilmer school superintendent Rick Albritton.

A small army of emergency crews were quickly on the scene, as police say the driver of this car pulled out in the path of a Gilmer ISD school bus, and the bus broad sided the vehicle.

"Our bus driver was traveling north there's a stop sign here she did everything she could to avoid the wreck and we just hope the people in the car are as well as the kids in the bus" Albritton says.

At the time, the bus was carrying 35 students ranging in age from 4-to-17. Only one school bus student was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The people inside the car, including two children, suffered serious injuries. An 11 year old girl was taken by helicopter to a Dallas hospital. A 17 year old boy was transported to Longview Regional, and the driver taken to Gilmer ETMC.

Albritton says it could have been worse, if the bus driver swerves right or left, the bus could have overturned,  risking worse injury to all the children.

"A very traumatic experience for her but she did a great job handling the kids handling the situation" says Albritton.

Investigators say none of the injuries appeared life threatening.

All of the students were checked out buy emergency personnel at the scene, and were taken by another bus to their schools.

State troopers say the driver of the car will be ticketed for failure to yield right of way.
