Search Called Off For Van Shooting Suspect

Van Police, sheriff's deputies, DPS Troopers and several other East Texas law enforcement agencies were all looking for 31-year-old, Darrell Damont Petty of Dallas.  Petty was involved in a shooting, early Tuesday evening at 230 Maple Street in Van, just south of Highway 110.

No one was hurt in the shooting, but police say Petty took off on foot when officers arrived at the house, responding to a scuffle.  Petty is on parole for a previous murder conviction.  After he fled the scene, police began a manhunt, bringing in K-9 units to track the suspect.  They followed the trail to a nearby Pine Street, where police believed Petty was held up inside one of the homes.

After searching the residences, police discovered no one inside and began a door-to-door search.

Following a tip, however, police later discovered that Petty approached a home on Oak Street--just blocks away--shortly after the shooting, and asked to use the resident's phone.  Twenty minutes later, he was picked up by an unidentified white vehicle.  Police then called off the search.

If you have any information, you are asked to contact Van Police or the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Department.
