Fire in Houston High-rise Senior Complex

At least three people have been hurt in today's fire in a Houston high-rise apartment building for the elderly.

Investigators are trying to determine what started the blaze in the eight-story assisted living complex. Fire Department officials say 12 people had to be rescued. Flames and smoke could be seen pouring from a window as a fire truck was used in rescues about two-thirds of the way up the building.

Other residents of the more than 200-unit complex were evacuated via stairwells and alternate exits. Authorities say three people were transported to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The fire struck the Bellerive Senior High Rise public housing for low-income residents. It's operated by the Houston Housing Authority.

Housing officials say the building was up to code for fire and structural requirements.
