Walking By Faith and Not By Sight Lesson

She lost her sight, but at the same time she gained vision.  Catherine Harrison of Tyler has been legally blind 10 years.  Her once everyday tasks are now very difficult challenges.  She's now turning this challenge into a lesson of faith, and it's already got an East Texas pastor taking notice.

"The stick has to be what finds the world in front of you," said Harrison.  Harrison leads her life by her favorite bible verse 2 Corinthians 5:7: "We must walk by faith and not by sight."

"This is my lot in life, and you can do it well, or do it poorly," said Harrison.  "I chose to do it well."  Now, this example is something Green Acres Pastor David Dykes wants to bring to all East Texans.

"When you go to this side you step forward with your right foot," said Harrison as she teaches Pastor Dykes how to maneuver the cane.  Harrison taught him how to get from point A to B without sight and to conquer stairs.  Harrison even helped Pastor Dykes go into the store and buy a cross.

"Constantly know where the grass is, that way you stay on the sidewalk," said Harrison.  "Your foot is going to find the hole.  Just like your spiritual walk.  When you hit something, what does it tell you you need to do?  Walk away from it.  Walk away from the obstacles," said Harrison.  One other lesson: orientation, knowing where you are.

"You don't just keep going when you are lost," said Harrison.  "You sit down and figure out where the heck you are and how you need to get there."

"I really completely forgot about my sight," said Pastor Dykes.  "I forgot about the visual image. I was just concentrating on the feel and experience of the cane.  I was listening, feeling smelling.  My other senses had to pitch in and help.  I was very surprised at how difficult it was. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.  The lesson there is that even though we face fear and scary things in life, you can overcome your fears as well.  That is what Catherine lives out every time she takes a step."

"Everyday I wake up I say today I am going to chose to walk by faith," said Harrison.  "Today, I am going to chose spiritual vision instead of what I can't see, when he took my sight and gave me vision.  It is much better to have, but I would have never asked for it and that's what he gave me."  A vision that will be shared with those that can see.

Harrison has also an inspirational speaker who actually wrote a bible study titled "Walking By Faith and Not By Sight."
