Arrest Was Valid; Waiting on Extradition Warrant

An East Texas woman on the run from authorities for over thirty years appeared in court Thursday.

Anderson County Judge Mark Calhoon said her arrest was legal and authorities have the right woman. That was his decision at the hearing for 54 year old Deborah Ann Gavin Murphey.

Murphey escaped a Georgia prison 33 years ago and was found in Frankston last Wednesday. Anderson County Judge Mark Calhoon said her arrest was proper and set her bond at $250,000.

"He is required to hold her over for a period of up to 30 days in which gives time for state of Georgia time to seek a warrant for her extradition," said Stanley Sokoloski, Assistant Anderson County District Attorney.

Murphey faces armed not only robbery charges from a 1972 crime, but also escape charges.
