Adopt A Highway Founders Beautify East Texas Roadways

Adopting a Highway is now a worldwide craze, but the first adopted highway was right here in East Texas.

The Tyler Civitan Club started the program after realizing the Texas Highway Department needed assistance with road-side pick-up.

Today was Don't Mess with Texas Trash-off Day. The Civitan club were one  of many groups who gathered on the side of their adopted road for a little spring cleaning.

"It saves money for the state of Texas because it beautifies the place when you can keep it clean," said Betty Nokes of Tyler Civitan Club.

The club says they recently hosted people from Japan who were interested in trying Adopt a Highway in their country. Civitan members, who started Adopt a Highway, were some of the first on Highway 69 picking up trash Saturday morning.
