School Reacts to Teacher's Tragic Death

Faculty at Bonner Elementary School are in shock after the tragic death of a fellow teacher Saturday.

Tracy Mitchel, 28, a reading and recovery teacher, was heading to a family reunion in Conroe, TX, when an SUV hydroplaned hitting her head on. DPS reports indicate the SUV was traveling at unsafe speeds for roadway conditions.

Tracy's mother was with her and is now being treated at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

Bonner students were off for teacher inservice day Monday, but faculty and staff met to prepare for the students' return.

"They'll want to know did she suffer...did she die instantly?" said Bonner counselor Sharion Brumbelow. "We'll answer those questions truthfully and honestly, we want them to know exactly what happened."

Brumbelow says Tyler Independent School District has a district trauma team that assists schools in times like these. Counselors from each Tyler campus will come to Bonner to help students and teachers cope.

Tracy taught first graders with special reading needs. Principal Angela Nelson said in Tracy's three year career at Bonner, she encouraged many students.

"She was a doll, she was young, and she impacted the lives of many children," Principal Nelson said. "Many children are reading today because of how she has helped them."

Tracy married Roland Mitchel last summer and was looking forward to continuing her education...possibly going into counseling.

Funeral services for Tracy are scheduled for 10:30 a.m.,Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Malakoff.
