What Are Local Schools Doing To Protect Your Children?

Tyler Independent School District representatives said it works hard to keep student records confidential, safeguarding students and their information from theft.

In addition to using alarms and surveillance in its schools, the district said using alternate means of identifying their students is a good way to keep information out of the wrong hands.

Deputy Superintendent Cecil McDaniel said more often than not, the district uses ID numbers instead of Social Security numbers.

"If I were to request some information on a student, I'm going to be looking for a student ID number," he said.  "And that's what I would actually enter into the system in order to gain access into that students information."

To keep your kids' identities safe, credit agencies recommend periodically running reports for your child through the different credit bureaus.

You can also call the Social Security Administration Office to check for usage on your child's number, and you can lock the number if there is any unusual activity.
