Apaches Celebrate Championship, Honor Fallen Friends

It was an exciting, yet emotional weekend for the Tyler Junior College Apache baseball team. The team divided up and began their annual Black vs. Gold five game World Series on Saturday, just one day after a celebration honoring their national championship of 2007.

Sixty former Apaches came back to Tyler from as far away as Colorado to celebrate the teams and their first-ever championship.

Friday night, at halftime of the TJC football game, the team received their national championship rings. Rings were also presented to the families of Apaches Payton Diers and Austin Phillips. Diers was killed in a car accident this month, and Phillips died on meningitis two years ago.

Both families say they feel like their sons will always be Apaches.
