Collection Jar For East Texas Woman's Chemotherapy Treatments Stolen

At just 19-years old Shawna Wells is battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Without insurance, she and her family put out collection jars to help raise money for her chemotherapy treatments.

It was one of these jars that investigators say Danny Joe Woodard stole from a convenience store in Sulphur Springs on September 30th. The whole thing was caught on surveillance video.

"I don't know how people can be so thoughtless," said Angie Shott, an employee at the convenience store. "To not have heart, be so selfish and do something like that is beyond me."

The suspect slipped away unnoticed with 2,000 dollars of charity money donated for Shawna's cause.

"Everybody's got the same reaction, they're highly upset," said Lewis Tatum with the Hopkins County Sheriff's Department.  "A lot of people putting in all their extra money so this young lady could get her treatment, it's a bad situation."

On Wednesday, Woodard was arrested and confessed to the crime but the money was all gone.

"It kind of made it an eye-opening experience that someone could do that but I'm not mad or anything at him," said Shawna Wells.

Though it's a huge setback for Shawna, her brave spirit and optimism shines strong.

"They tell me just don't worry about it, you're ok, and you're going to make it," said Wells.

She also say the outpouring of support from her family and community keeps her going.

"I'd really like to tell everyone thank you," said Wells. "It means a lot that they did a lot of stuff for me."
