Justice Center Master Plan In

The master plan is in.

Monday, Commissioners got their final report on the proposed $125,000,000 jail bond, just less than a month before taxpayers decide if it is really worth the price.

More than a year in the making, county officials say the plans for the new Smith County justice center doesn't just give more room for inmates, but provides more room for future expansion.

The master plan includes both renovations of the current Smith County jail, as well as a new jail tower, low risk facility, office space, and a new parking garage.

In all, more than 1364 new beds will be available for inmates when all the work is finished. That number will accomodate the counties needs for years to come. Studies show Smith County will need 1,433 beds by 2017.

"This is something we are responsible for it, Smith County is one of the largest communities around here. We need to be able to house other peoples inmates not just our own," said County Judge Joel Baker, "I want people to be educated on this, I want them to understand what it includes and why we have to do what we have to do."

Now, with all the information floating around about the jail, county officials have put out this guide, so you can have all the information on the jail in your hands before you make your decision at the polls.

There will be two more town hall meetings. The first is next Tuesday at the Glass Recreation Center in Tyler. The second is next Thursday at the Bullard City Hall. Both are at 6 pm. Members from HDR, the architecture firm, will be there.
