Sheriff's Vehicle Fleet Subject of Commissioner Court Debate

Smith County Commissioner Sharon Emmert says that the sheriff's department may be costing taxpayers money by having more vehicles than it needs.

Emmert told the commissioners court Monday morning that she found 18 parked patrol cars at the sheriff's office in the middle of a weekday.

She also showed a report from the auditor's office, in which the sheriff's department had sixty seven sworn personnel and ninety two vehicles.

The Sheriff's office said fifteen of their cars are up for sale...and that they need enough vehicles to operate as an emergency organization.

Commissioners agreed to discuss the Sheriff Offices fleet when they start going through there budget in the next few months.
