Mineola Volunteer Fire Department Celebrates 100 Years

They put themselves on the front lines everyday.

"They're here because they get a lot of satisfaction helping other people in their time of need," said Steve Finley with the Mineola Fire Department.

Through the years, these brave men and women have responded to all kinds of emergency situations such as house fires, car accidents, and hazmat situations.

"It's a tradition, it's a culture and without those volunteer groups a large percentage of America would not have that emergency service we're accustomed to having at the touch of a button," said Finley.

"We couldn't wait," said Mineola resident Sonia Assal. "I mean we're a small community and we couldn't wait for Tyler or anywhere else to respond, so it's wonderful. I think we need to pay them."

Folks in Mineola say their sacrifices don't go unnoticed or unappreciated.

"Right after we moved in here my daughter's car caught on fire and one of them was right there," said resident Jayne Robertson. "We really appreciate them."

Many turned out Saturday to say thank you, pay tribute to fallen heroes, and watch a new flag raise as they hope for continued success in the next 100 years.
