UT Tyler Students On Alert After Alleged Kidnapping

The alleged victim is not a ut tyler student, however, she was attending an event at the UT Cowan Center.

She claims when she left about 8 p.m. on September 27th, she was approached by three men who led her to their truck and forced her in the backseat. She says they sexually assaulted her, then 5 hours later released her on south 69 going toward Flint. The university has sent out an e-mail to students and faculty about the incident and that has some students alarmed.

"I was shocked," said UT graduate student Savannah Hughes.  "I walk alone a lot at night after i get out of classes. It's all dark and shadowy and this has made me think about walking with someone else."

"Try not to walk alone at night," said UT Tyler Police Chief Mike Medders. "Try to stay in well-lit areas. If you see anything suspicious we're on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Call the police department for an escort to your residence or to your vehicle out here in the parking lot."

UT Tyler police say they have been on top of this, investigating since the alleged attack happened. So far they say there's no physical evidence to go on. In fact campus investigtors say a security officer stationed at the Cowan Center that night did not see any suspicious activity. This is all part of the reason there was a delay issuing an alert on campus.

The alleged victim had a very sketchy description of the suspects. She says there were two white men and one hispanic man all in their early 20's. She says the truck was a new 4 door pick up but did not know the make or model.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
