Well Closed Off; Residents Can Go Home

Any displaced residents from Tuesday's gas well leak are allowed to go back into their homes. Crews tell us they have closed off  the well and it is no longer spewing natural gas or water into the air. The well, located near FM 850 and FM 3226 in the Chapel Hill Area, had been spewing natural gas into the air since Tuesday afternoon.

A representative from Samson, the company who owns the well, said crews were able to stop the spewing after using special equipment to completely close off it off.

"We were able to slip the equipment we needed over the existing pipe that was sticking up, secure it, close it in, and in effect, restore the well to being shut in," says D.J. Ponville, Executive Vice President of Operations for Samson.

Right now, crews are in the clean-up process.  Friday, they will resume their initial work of abandoning the well, permanently closing it off.
