Five Championship Rings Not Enough For Sherman

Geoff Sherman's already got a fistful of jewelry. Now, it's back to work to win one for the other thumb.

The senior plays goalie for the University of Texas at Tyler soccer team, the two-time defending champions of the American Southwest Conferences. In his last semester of eligibility, Sherman wants one more championship to go along with the ones he's already earned.

A T.K. Gorman graduate, Sherman helped found both the soccer and baseball programs at UT Tyler winning championship in 2003, 2005, and 2006 as a goalie, and in 2005 and 2007 as an infielder.

"I think it was great to be a part of that," Sherman said. "I'll always be on the first baseball team, and on one of the first soccer teams. Just being a part of something and starting something, it always makes it special for you."

"(Baseball) Coach Vilade calls us the first 26, and that's really a big honor for me.  Every guy who's come through the program has played a huge part at putting UT Tyler on the map. You always want to leave your footprint everywhere you go."

With five championship rings already, Sherman's legacy is ensured. He'll graduate in December and begin student teaching back at Gorman high school. Right now, he's only interested his last semester of eligibility, and one more championship. He says the rings are nice, but...

"They just sit on my dresser at the house," Sherman laughs. " I'm sure it'll kick in when I get older."
