U.S. Army Sniper Not Guilty Of Murder

A U.S. military panel in Baghdad has acquitted Army Specialist Jorge Sandoval on charges he killed two unarmed Iraqis. The same panel today convicted him of planting evidence on one of the men in attempt to cover up the shooting.

The court-martial panel decided he had placed a detonation wire on one of the bodies to make it look like the man was an insurgent. Sandoval is from Laredo, Texas, and had faced five charges in the two deaths in April and May.

Army investigators began probing the deaths after reports of alleged wrongdoing from fellow soldiers. Sandoval was arrested in June while on a two-week home leave in Texas. Two other men are charged in the case, including one who testified against Sandoval yesterday.
