East Texas Against Lawsuit Abuse Sponsors Essay Contest For Students

Contest Open to area sixth and seventh graders

East Texans against Lawsuit Abuse (ETALA) along with area businesses announced today its sponsorship for the fifth annual essay contest for area sixth and seventh graders.  The authors of the top two essays on "personal responsibility" will receive a $500 and $100 savings bonds.

"Back by popular demand, our essay contest encourages students to think about the importance of personal responsibility and resist our society's tendency to point fingers when anything goes wrong," said ETALA Executive Director, Diane Davis.  "Personal responsibility is a huge character building skill that needs to be developed in each of us.  This contest does just that.  It allows our students to learn about the importance of personal responsibility and why we need it in our  own lives.  And the fact that the winners get savings bonds as their award is just the icing on the cake," Davis continued.

Participating students can answer one of the three essay questions:

  • What happens when we do not take personal responsibility?
  • Why do we need personal responsibility?
  • How do you take personal responsibility in your own life?

ETALA's essay contest is part of an on-going public awareness effort on the importance of personal responsibility.

Last year's winners in the 6th grade category were Story Sasseen in first place and Cassity Irvin as runner up, both of Hallsville Middle School.  First place winner in the seventh grade Hayden Wall of Pine Tree Middle School.  Breanna Herring of Foster Middle School was named runner up in the 7th grade division.

"It's never too early to encourage our children to be independent, responsible thinkers.  We're hopeful they will grow into into adults who embrace personal responsibility and help eliminate lawsuit abuse once and for all," said Davis.
