Tyler Woman's Winning Recipe Could Win Her $10,000

Mary Beth Harris-Murphree said she loves to cook, and she loves winning, which is why she is hoping to win $10,000 in the Sutter Home Build a Better Burger National Cook-off.

"I really think the first time you ever go to a cook-off, you get the bug and you're addicted," said Murphree.  "And that's what happened,  because it was such a fun cook-off."

Mary Beth is no stranger to food competitions.

She said she was first bitten by the competition bug in 2003 while flipping through a magazine.

"I just happened to find the advertisement for the Build a Better Burger Cook-off, and I said, I can do that," she said.

Apparently, so did the judges of that year's competition.

She was a finalist that year, which only fed her appetite to enter and place in cook-off, after cook-off.  Her recipes have taken her to Napa Valley, New York, Chicago, and Gilroy, California, the 'Garlic Capital of the World.'

And several of her recipes are now published in cook books.

But she said the experience is what she looks forward to the most.

"The best part really is the trip," she said.  "It's a free trip for you and a guest and most of the people that compete with you are just wonderful.  I consider that a win."

And with her little assistant chef by her side, her 5 month old son, Taylor, she's pretty confident about the recipe for this year's contest.

"You want it to be a burger, but you kind of want it to be unique, you know, so you kind of take a twist on old ingredients," she said.  "A lot of people in Texas put salsa on everything, so I started with that concept."

It is competitive cooking, from the heart.
