Fire Investigators Determine Cause Of Fatal Fire

Fire investigators have determined the cause of a house fire that killed Molly Ferguson,76, of Smith County. Fire Marshals and the Texas Railroad Commission were out at the home all Wednesday conducting tests on the structure's pipes. They have determined there was a gas leak in the piping inside the home's concrete slab that caused a flash explosion.

"Apparently the gas had seeped through the concrete and into an air-duct tunnel for the central heat and air unit.  We believe that the air conditioner cycled on for Mrs. Ferguson inside the home and the gas was inflammable.  That's what led to the ignition source and caused the explosion," said Jim Seaton, Smith County Fire Marshal.

He said cases like this are rare, but as a precaution homeowners should always have their piping "pressure tested" every five years.
