Officials: Bush To Announce Troop Cut

President Bush has decided to accept his top Iraq commander's plan for a gradual drawdown of troops.

Administration officials report the decision to reduce troop levels by as many as 30,000 by next summer will be announced in a prime-time address Thursday night. The president has already been rehearsing it.

But while accepting the idea of returning to pre-surge levels in Iraq by next summer, Bush places a key but familiar condition on further troop cuts: that there be continued progress on both security and political fronts.

Officials say the president will acknowledge that many people have deep doubts about the war. But he's expected to again warn that too quick a pullout from Iraq invites disaster for both Iraqi and U.S interests.

KLTV 7 will carry coverage of President Bush's speech beginning Thursday night at 8pm.
