East Texas School Rules Against 5-Year Old's Pony Tail

Two Union Grove parents are on the losing end of a dispute to allow their 5-year old son to wear his pony tail to school.

We introduced you to John Michael Caviness last month.

The principal at Union Grove Elementary School says the kindergartner's pony tail violates school policy, because male students' hair has to be above the collar.

Monday night, John's parents addressed the school board about their grievance.

His mother, Cristy Caviness told KLTV 7, "The one thing we asked to do was please justify this. How it was a danger or a distraction to students? They flat out told us they couldn't justify it."

John was put in "In-School Suspension" today for still having the pony tail.

His parents say John has a pony tail, because he wants to wear his hair like his dad's.
