Police Arrest East Texas Man In Connection To Athens Murder

Just three days after a violent East Texas murder, an Athens man is behind bars charged with capital murder.  Early Thursday morning, police arrested Edward Smalley, 51, at a home near Houston.  Smalley is accused of brutally attacking and killing Tony Moore, 39, at the victim's Athens home on Monday.

A tip late last night, Athens police say, led to the arrest of Smalley.  Smalley, police say, had been staying with family in Huffman, Texas located near Houston.

"Using information that we had gathered through the investigation, as well as evidence that was collected at the crime scene, we obtained an arrest warrant for Mr. Smalley," said Athens Police Chief Buddy Hill.

During the arrest, police say they also found Moore's stolen 2003 Jaguar and seized it as evidence.  Besides that, police still do not know why the murder took place.

"Even though we have Mr. Smalley under arrest, we have yet to interview him about what happened at the house," said Hill.

What we do know is police have dealt with Smalley before.   Records show Smalley being arrested for a number of crimes dating back to the late 1990's.  Crimes like assault that causes bodily injury, burglary of habitation, delivery of marijuana and escaping custody.

"It's not over yet," said Hill.  "There is still a lot of work to do.  It's a relief to know we have someone under arrest."

An arrest, police say, that may bring some justice for a man that was loved by those that knew him.
