East Texas Woman Undertakes Project Of A Lifetime

She's the ultimate "do-it-yourselfer."

She's 60 years old, but one East Texas widow is no stranger to hard work.

Freddie Stiefer said it took her five years, but she is almost done building her own, brand new home.

"I have a double-wide that's old and falling apart, and I could not see putting a lot of repair money into that," she said.  "So I determined, well, why don't you do it yourself?

Stiefer said she has always done things for herself and made it up in her mind to build a house right behind her current home

And that is exactly what she did.

Stiefer did the framing, the insulation, the plumbing, and even the electrical wiring herself--with a little help from friends and family.

"You do learn to use a lot of equipment and a lot of tools," she said.

She also picked up some building tips from the Internet.

She said the This Old House web site is particularly helpful.

"It has little videos on there.  It steps you through it."

Stiefer plans to retire in 17 months and said she hopes to move into her new home by Christmas.

Her theory:  no matter how old, or young you are, if you put your mind to it, anything is possible.

"Don't be afraid," she said.  "If you are afraid, do it anyway."

Good advice for anyone.
