Americans Work Harder Than Any Other Country

For the team at Double Dave's Pizza, today is just like any other day.

Jessica Feyen, a staff member at Double Dave's, said they were expecting a pretty big lunch crowd.

"I wasn't supposed to be working," she said.  "I would be sleeping right now.

It's labor day, and the Double Dave's crew was doing just that--working--serving those who did get the day off.

"Everyone has to be working so that everyone can get their pizzas, if they want them," said Feyen.  "It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's kind of a bummer that I have to work on Labor Day.

The Double Dave's crew is much like most working Americans.

In fact, the United Nations International Labor Organization reports Americans work longer hours, and are more productive, than any other country in the world--producing nearly $64,000 of wealth each year per worker.

"Sure.  I'd love to have more vacation time," said Torey Hughes, assistant manager at the Target on South Broadway.

Hughes said even though he would love the rest, he doesn't mind working the long hours or during holidays.

"I actually love what I do. I love coming to work everyday," he said.  "It doesn't bother me at all that I'm working forty-plus hours a week.

Hughes said one of the most beneficial things is going to work and being able to interact with the people.

Which seems to be a common feeling.

Feyen said she loves her job, too.

"I mean, I'm getting paid not very much to work at a pizza place, but it's amazing.  I love working here," she said

Something that makes laboring on Labor Day that much more enjoyable.
