Weekend Draws Boaters To East Texas Lakes

It's the last long weekend for kids to swim, and the last boating weekend for families to enjoy.

"Pulling tubes and swimming and just having a great time with the family" says Todd Sutherland of Hallsville.

Many lake were closed off this summer because of heavy flooding, but with all open parks officials expect massive crowds at lakes over the next three days.

"Well its all about the last part of summer getting the kids down here letting them enjoy the lake one more time before it gets to be winter time they're going to school" says lake Gladewater boater Kyle Butaud.

Lake officials are keeping a close watch on what is also a traditional heavy alcohol consumption weekend.

"We haven't run into any problems like that this year or the past years so we've been real fortunate" says Sara Sutherland.

Many, like the Sutherland family, worry that the mix of alcohol and boating takes some of the fun out of their boating.

"We want to be safe, we've never had any trouble, its seems to be well patrolled" says Sara.

But those who are enjoying this weekend on the lakes, are hoping relaxation is the only thing they'll have to worry about.

"Its all about having good time hanging out with friends and family" says Kyle.

There were surprisingly light crowds on east Texas lakes today. But game wardens and parks officials say they expect the busiest days to be Sunday and Monday. Bob Hallmark reporting.  bhallmark@kltv.com.
