Josh Nelson 1988-2007: State Champion Passes Away

A sad start to the high school football season.

Thursday afternoon Gilmer Buckeye Josh Nelson died.

KLTV was told by a close family friend that Josh died at Children's Hospital in Dallas from complications with leukemia. Josh was a member of the state championship team of 2004.

It was exactly one year ago that KLTV profiled Josh. Josh had battled leukemia for more than a year and a half. He was getting better, but in May returned to the hospital where he continued his fight.

KLTV 7 Sports Director Maya Golden spoke to Josh just three weeks ago and his spirits were up. Josh told her even if he did not make it he would be happy because he would join his mother in heaven. She passed away a year ago from leukemia as well.

Josh Nelson was 18-years-old.

A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Gilmer.

The Gilmer Buckeyes open the football season on Friday. Buckeye fans will wear the Nelson jersey at the pep rally and game in his honor.
