Judge Cynthia Stevens Kent Won't Seek Re-Election

After 20 years and thousands of rulings, a Tyler judge says she's retiring.

Judge Cynthia Stevens Kent told a full courtroom of friends and colleagues Tuesday that she'll step down as judge of the 114th Judicial District Court at the end of next year.   She is giving more than a year's notice so others can consider whether they want to run in primary elections early in 2008.

"if you look back where we started in 1984 when I took the bench, a lot of things have changed and I think I've been a part of that. It's not like I'm retiring to do nothing.  I'm retiring to do service in a different capacity," Kent said.

Judge Kent will be going into private practice after she steps down.  She is married to Don Kent, also an attorney, and they have three sons. One is in the Navy and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq.
