Smith County Commissioners took two steps in the right direction this past week.
First, they added a public hearing after hours so voters could have a voice in the budget process. And second, they decided to allow voters to approve the jail plan.
No matter how you look at it Smith County needs a new jail.
And it's your money! So you should have approval on a smart plan to spend it wisely. But the commissioners still have a lot of work to do to turn a blue print into reality.
Equally important they also have work to do to build voter confidence in them and the plan. Allowing voters to get involved, developing a solid plan and keeping east texans informed is a sure way to do it.
Their decisions this week were a step in the right direction in making this a better east texas.
