Gregg County Jail Generating Revenue, Upping Salaries

Gregg County's Sheriff is proposing salary increases for his workers including deputies and jailers because of revenue from their jail. The Gregg County Jail can house up to 900 inmates, allowing the county to lease out hundreds of beds to surrounding Smith, Harrison, and Nacodoghes counties.

Judge Bill Stoudt, the Gregg County Judge, "It's a first step. It's something; we're trying to move those salaries closer to to what our competitors, so to speak, in terms of keeping the qualified deputies here and not letting them move."

The judge says the net revenue from leasing out jail beds totals around $700,000 for the county this year.
