Update: Suspect Dies In Shootout With East Texas Deputies

A Van Zandt County man shot by two deputies has died.  The sheriff's department says around 2:00 pm, the deputies were called to James Gaston's home on County Road 4413 in the small community of Colfax in Van Zandt County.

According to sheriff's officials, the woman who called by Gaston's wife, who said he was threatening both of their lives. The sheriff's department says it then made contact with the husband by phone.  From there it obtained a mental evaluation warrant and around 2:00 p.m. this afternoon four deputies went to the husbands home in Colfax.  From there, the details get a little sketchy.

"He (Gaston) came out of the house, kind of circled his house in his pick-up, as he approached the house again, deputies confronted him." said Van Zandt County Chief Deputy John Turner.  "He produced a gun and fired, and they (deputies) returned fire and the suspect was hit and the deputies are ok."  The sheriff's department says it does not know how many times the deputies fired at the husband, or where he was hit.  Neighbors say Gaston pretty much kept to himself, and when they saw him outside he was often friendly making it hard to believe something so terrible happened just down their street.

The sheriff's department says the Texas Rangers have been called out to the scene to investigate.  At this time, the names of the deputies involved in the shooting have not been released.
