New Price & Design For Smith Co. Jail

There's a new price tag and design for the Smith County Jail.

The proposed justice center would includes a new jail tower and a new low risk wing in addition to the existing jail. In all, the projected cost to build the jail is now at 99 million dollars. Commissioners, the Jail Task Force and the Sheriff all agree the County desperately needs a new jail and more bed space. However, there are some concerns.

"We are very close to the deadline and I am interested in having the task force review what we've seen today," said Joann Fleming, Smith County Commissioner Precinct 1. "Quite frankly, I am concerned about the parking."

"They took a lot of factors we had through the 14-15 months we've been on the task force and incorporated those.  And I think we've come out with a product the community can have confidence in," said Jail Task Force Committee Member Gaylord Hughey.

The next step in this bond proposal is for the Jail Task Force to get their concerns on the new jail design to Smith County Commissioners by Friday. Then on Monday Judge Joel Baker says the court will hopefully take action on the plan so the jail bond will make it on the November ballot.
