Bell Golf Tournament to Benefit ETMC's Prostate Cancer Outreach

Team and individual registration for the 7th annual Henry M. Bell, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament is now under way, with proceeds to benefit East Texas Medical Center's prostate cancer outreach.  Hosted by the ETMC Cancer Institute and the ETMC Foundation, the charity tournament is set for Friday, Sept. 21 at Willow Brook Country Club in Tyler.   Sponsors include corporate champion Suddenlink, media sponsor KDOK/KTBB and a host of medical groups and businesses.

The event will feature a full afternoon of recreation and socialization, including a shotgun start scramble tournament, awards reception and other amenities.   To receive a registration brochure, or for sponsorship information, please contact the ETMC Foundation at (903) 596-3645 or 1-866-444-ETMC.

The 2006 Bell Tournament raised approximately $30,000 to benefit ETMC's prostate cancer education and screening programs.  This funding was well utilized in June of this year to cover expenses associated with ETMC's regional PSA screenings that help in the early detection of prostate cancer.  More than 1,500 eligible men throughout East Texas received the free screenings this year, noted Todd Sigmon, administrative director of the ETMC Cancer Institute.

"The ETMC Cancer Institute and a dedicated team of urologists, oncologists and radiation oncologists are committed to fighting prostate cancer in East Texas," explained Sigmon.  "The Bell Tournament raises both awareness and funding that help continue to promote early detection and provide the latest treatment options."

The tournament also honors the late Henry M. Bell, Jr., former Chairman of the Board of the East Texas Medical Center Foundation and long-term supporter of the East Texas Medical Center Regional Healthcare System.  The Advisory Committee for the event includes Allen Bell, Rebecca Berkley, Dr. Robert Droder, Dr. Gary Gross, Dr. James Kolker, Dr. James McAndrew, Dr. Steven Roberts, Todd Sigmon and Marty Wiggins.

In addition to corporate champion Suddenlink and media sponsor KDOK/KTBB, event sponsors to date include Awards Reception - The Rogers Foundation; Box Lunch - Southside Bank; Cart Sponsor - Tyler Hematology-Oncology; Registration Tent - Adams & Coker; Beverage Sponsor - Capital One; and Goody Bag Sponsor - Blood and Cancer Center of East Texas.

The East Texas Medical Center Cancer Institute has made landmark progress in the "War against Prostate Cancer" over the past decade through innovative education, screening and treatment programs.  Since 1998, ETMC has issued an annual call to arms to East Texas men at risk for prostate cancer.  More than 25,000 have answered that call by receiving a PSA blood test to help detect prostate cancer at its most treatable stage.
