It's almost time to head back to school, but for many East Texas children that means going without food on the weekends. Saturday, the East Texas Food Bank held a Backpack Food Drive at Broadway Square Mall in Tyler to help those students out. The food bank fills backpacks with foods like peanut butter, crackers and cereal to give out to students on Fridays before they leave for home.
"The students who are getting these backpacks are identified as chronically hungry, meaning they are actually experiencing the symptoms of what it truly means to be hungry," says Food Bank Child Hunger Program Coordinator Brandi Lamberth. "This program is helping sustain them over the weekend and giving them the nutrition that they need." If you would like to help, drop off foods like peanut butter and cereal at the East Texas Food Bank, located on Robertson Road in Tyler.
