Vehicle Carrying Heavy Load Hits East Texas Bridge

A vehicle pulling a tall load failed to make the 14-foot, 7-inch clearance at the Interstate 20 overpass at SH 149/US 259 (or Eastman Road) earlier this morning in Gregg County, and struck the overpass.

The vehicle was towing heavy equipment, part of which struck the outside beam on the westbound overpass, knocking out a section of one of the five horizontal supports. The other four are in good condition and are fully bearing the structure's load.

Out of caution, TxDOT has closed the outside lane and shoulder on the I-20 overpass, and that lane will remain closed tempoarily, pending a detailed evaluation to come as early as tomorrow.

In order to repair the damage, TxDOT is in the process of creating and releasing an emergency contract, which should have the structure repaired by the end of the year or the beginning of next year at the latest.

"In the meantime," said TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz, "the overpass is safe to drive on. We spent much of the morning evaluating its structural integrity, and have concluded that it's safe. We're going to get that lane closure in place and keep it there out of an abundance of caution. And to be doubly sure, we're going to keep a close eye on it in the coming days and weeks."
