"Redneck Games" Under Scrutiny

Thousands of self-proclaimed "rednecks" crowded the Poole ATV Ranch for the 2007 Redneck Games.

There was the belly buster contest, the Spam eating contest, and something known as the "mattress chunk", where a team apparently downs a twelve-pack of beer and drives a mattress into the woods to see how far they can throw it.

"That's almost making a competition out of everything we try to avoid and try to stop," Lt. Pat McWilliams with the Henderson County Sheriff's Department said.

After complaints from neighbors about other events at the ranch, Henderson County put together a task force of more than 70 officers to try and help control what they said was an unruly crowd.

"A lot of alcohol, a lot of drinking, and a lot of rhetoric going on," said Lt. McWilliams.

The weekend ended with 54 arrests, including 9 DWI's, 2 DUI's involving minors, 2 possession of marijuana arrests and 32 minor in possession citations.

"Inside the park on the ranch itself, it's just a blessing that we didn't have somebody killed from an accident or from alcohol poisoning or something like that," said Lt. McWilliams.

Lt. McWilliams also said all attendees were in danger because there was not adequate medical care at the event. He suspects some people may file lawsuits against the organizer.

Redneck Games out of Kilgore may also be facing misdeanor criminal charges for violating the Mass Gathering Act.  A maximum of of 2500 people were allowed on the premises, but officials say there were upwards of 6000.

If convicted of that misdemeanor, the owner of Redneck Events could face 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

We tried contacting Redneck Events, but our calls were not returned.
