It's the first time in over a decade Smith County will not have an evening public hearing on the proposed budget and the tax rate hike.
Monday commissioners rejected a motion by Commissioner Joann Fleming to hold such a hearing. Fleming said this is a mistake by the court and they should reconsider.
"It's a simple matter, but a very important matter. Elected officials have a responsibility to make themselves available to the public. Just because you may have a year when alot of people don't show up doesn't mean that is going to happen this year. This is a new year," said Fleming.
Commissioners did set two additional public hearings: 9 a.m. on August 13th, and 9 a.m. August 20th. These in addition to the August 27th meeting at 9:30 am.
