Kilgore Ready To Resume "Tradition"

The Kilgore Bulldogs begin their season a week earlier than normal. No spring ball for a team that, just two years removed from a state championship, missed the playoffs last season for the first time in 11 years. Coming up one game short remains fresh on the players minds.

"Everyday," said senior quarterback Erik King.  "I think about it everyday, and pray and work at it. We'll be there."

"I think our players right now know that they want to try to change what happened last year and see if we can get back in," said head coach Mike Vallery.

What is it going to take to get back there?

"Win," said junior quarterback Steven McBride.  "We're going to win."

And that's the bottom line.  Just win.  While they may not have the same talent they had in 2004 when they won the state championship, they have the same tradition, and that tradition in Kilgore is winning football games.

"We're trying to make it better this year by working harder and coming out and practicing more," said senior linebacker Rick Thomas.  "Hopefuly we'll go back to the playoffs and get the tradition back alive."

"It means a lot to us and we certainly know it means a lot to our coaches about getting into the playoffs year in and year out," added McBride.  "We've got to do it. We're on a mission now."
