Mom told you to eat your vegetables. And now it's never been easier. These days you can buy vegetables, seasoned, cut and in a bag, ready to be steamed in seconds in the microwave. But of course, you lose some control over how they're prepared. Well, not anymore. Ziploc has come out with something new called the Zip 'N Steam. Basically it's a Ziploc bag. But this one's just a little bit special.
"For healthy meals in minutes," it says on the package. Ziploc gives you 7 of their large bags which, depending on how much you stuff in them, will make between 3 and 5 servings of steamed vegetables. The recipes inside are nice.
Don't be fooled when you first pull them out. They look much like a standard storage bag, except for the cooking times printed on the front. But near the top they have a special one-way steam vent built in.
The dish on the front of the package, Asian Vegetable Medley looked pretty good. Let's make it. We fill the bag with baby corn, sliced celery, snow peas, red bell pepper and carrot matchsticks. That's all. Then, just zip and steam.
We pop it in the microwave for about three and a half minutes and soon we were pouring out a hot, steaming dish of steamed vegetables. And they were actually good! Everything was fully cooked, but not too done. Just right. Still had plenty of crunch. By the way, no water was used. The Zip N' Steam pulls the water out of the vegetables.
Later we made Steamed Broccoli with Ginger and Glazed Carrots. All of our creations turned out great and clean up consisted of throwing away the bag!
"Does It Work?" We give the Zip 'N Steam a yes".
We paid $2.50 for 7 large sized bags that prepare 3-5 servings. You pay the same price for 10 medium sized bags.
We did have trouble finding these locally. Target in Tyler had them in stock, and they are also available at Wal-Mart.
