Tyler Police Step Up DWI Enforcement

It was a busy weekend for Tyler police officers, as they arrest eight drunk drivers.  Three of them, Palacios Zapot, Donald Engel,  and Bervin Roy, police say, were charged with their third DWI, or more.

Starting this weekend Tyler police will be out in full force looking for drunk drivers.  It's part of a DWI grant traffic enforcement program that will last through September.  Police say with all the recent arrests and accidents, it's time to crack down on drunk drivers.

"We hope that we can have some kind of impact on the number of DWI drivers that are in the Smith County area," said Tyler Police Sergeant Herbert Hayter.  "It's one of those offenses that you normally don't hear about until there is an accident, and obviously we want to impact that before the accident occurs."

Police also ask citizens to report cars that may be swerving, so police can get them off the streets as soon as possible.
