Evacuees Learn How to Avoid Housing Discrimination

Some evacuees from Hurricane Katrina and Rita are still having problems relocating in new cities. They're running into obstacles when trying to buy or rent homes.  In Tyler today, local evacuees learned how to recognize housing discrimination, and how to deal with it.  The meeting was provided by The Fair Housing Center.

"They kind of grouped us all together as bad survivors.  All of us are not bad.  Some of us are honest hard working people that just want to get on with life. Get life going again, and we have been discriminated against a lot because of Katrina," Sharon Shelein, a Katrina evacuee, said.

If you are an evacuee, and you think you've been the victim of housing discrimination, call toll free: 1-888-452-4778.
