Proud of East Texas: Dr. V.V. Gonzalez

From an underground fighter in the Philippines to a prominent pathologist in America, Dr. V. V. Gonzalez's life is quite a story.  Dr. Gonzalez was a medical student in Manilla when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and invaded the Philippines.  He spent the next few years as an underground fighter against the Japanese.

Gonzalez had always dreamed of coming to America and got his chance to complete his pathology residency at St. Paul's Hospital in Dallas through the GI Bill Of Rights because of his work in the Philippine Underground.

Gonzalez married an East Texan, Mary Louise Lay and moved to Tyler in 1963.  Because of his work as Assistant Medical Examiner in Dallas County, Gonzalez was consulted on suspicious cases.  Two of those cases, the Hemphill Murder Cover up and the death of Betty Lucas, wife of a former Tyler Mayor, brought Gonzalez international attention.  At the age of 84, Dr. V.V. Gonzalez says his dream of coming to America turned out better than he could have imagined.
